In November and December 1994 the Bristol Light Opera Club presented 42nd Street, “the song and dance spectacular”, at the Bristol Hippodrome, with Julia Kennedy as Peggy Sawyer, Steven Woolley as Julian Marsh and Gina Vardy as Dorothy Brock. Chairman Robert Hurst wrote that “over 300 talented boys and girls from the South West” had queued outside the theatre to audition for the dancing chorus, that the “entire cast of over 100” had worked with dedication, and thanked the “record-breaking audience”. He paid tribute to director and choreographer Vicki Klein, who “could organise the Olympics if required!” The National Westminster Bank was the major sponsor, and collections were taken each evening for charities including Children in Need and the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
