In November 1965 the Bristol Light Opera Club staged Lerner and Loewe’s Brigadoon, the Scottish fantasy of a village that appears for one day every hundred years, for a week at the Bristol Hippodrome. In his note, chairman Cliff Salter recalled that the previous year’s The Most Happy Fella, “probably the most difficult show we have tackled to date”, had shared the Evening Post Rose Bowl Award, and invited the audience to “sit back and, for a couple of hours lose yourself in the enjoyment of a fairy tale.” Eileen Vaughan produced and Vernon Jones conducted the augmented Hippodrome Orchestra, with the sword dance performed by members of the Westbury Scottish Society and costumes from William Mutrie Ltd. of Edinburgh.
