In April 1934 the Bristol Light Opera Club presented a double bill of Cox and Box and The Pirates of Penzance at the Victoria Rooms, Clifton, “by permission of R. D’Oyly Carte, Esq.”, each evening at 7.30. The programme admits that “the short life of the Club has been full of incident”, stresses that no production official, acting or orchestral member “receives any remuneration of any kind”, and claims the Club had “filled the gap left by the late C.C. Comedy Club”. The full orchestra came from the Club’s own Orchestral Section under Geo. S. M. Edward, the Town Clerk of Penzance contributed an article on the real pirates of his town, and the Club’s President was Her Grace the Duchess of Beaufort.
