In October 1989 the Bristol Light Opera Club presented Lerner & Loewe’s “magical musical” My Fair Lady at the Bristol Hippodrome, with Rebecca Brain as Eliza Doolittle and Nick Young as Professor Henry Higgins. In his remarks, chairman Alan Seager remembered that when the show was new, getting a record of the music in England “was like trying to get hold of a pair of nylons in wartime”, and that it had since “become part of the fabric of the Theatre”. A company of more than sixty singers and dancers was accompanied by a 24-strong orchestra led by Carolyn Burr, and the programme announced Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate as the Club’s Hippodrome show for November 1990.
