In January 1937 the Bristol Light Opera Club returned to the Victoria Rooms, Clifton, and to Gilbert and Sullivan with Princess Ida, or Castle Adamant, presented “by arrangement with Mr. Rupert D’Oyly Carte”. An open letter to “the Bristol Public”, signed “H. M.”, begins “You are an enigma” and admits that the Club lost more on The Vagabond King than it had made on The Geisha and The Pirates of Penzance together. It records that the deficit of “more than £140” had been cleared before the curtain rose on Princess Ida, a feat of which the Club, “less than three years old”, was “not unnaturally, proud”. Musical director H. L. Winston Hurst contributes a note on the score, praising its orchestration as “impeccable”.
