In November 1991 the Bristol Light Opera Club presented Jerry Herman’s “sensational musical” Hello, Dolly! at the Bristol Hippodrome, with Sylvia Jordan as Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi and Gerry Parker as Horace Vandergelder. Chairman Alan Seager noted that in the Club’s fifty-eight years it had never staged the show before: “there is always a first, and this is it.” He called the Hippodrome “our natural home”, but warned that the following year’s show, Pickwick, would move to the Victoria Rooms because the theatre was expected to have a long-running show. The 16-piece orchestra was led by Catherine Black, and the Club acknowledged financial help from the Paragon Concert Society, administering funds left by the late Leo Reid-Baker.
