In December 1992 the Bristol Light Opera Club presented Pickwick, the musical by Wolf Mankowitz, Leslie Bricusse and Cyril Ornadel based on Dickens’ Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, at the Bristol Hippodrome, with Robert Hurst as Pickwick and Mike Purnell as Sam Weller. Chairman Alan Seager remarked how many people know “If I ruled the World” without knowing it comes from Pickwick, and looked ahead to the Club’s “Diamond Jubilee year – 60 glorious years”, with Camelot at the Hippodrome in November 1993. His note closed with news, received “at the time of going to press”, of the death of the Club’s President, Alderman Marcus Hartnell. Roller skates for the skating scene came from “Rollermania”.
