In November 1979 the Bristol Light Opera Club returned to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, the story of the von Trapp family’s flight from Austria in 1938, for a two-week run at the Bristol Hippodrome produced by Sally Noble. Maureen Roberts played Maria in what the programme calls “her first lead for The Bristol Light Opera Club”, having joined the chorus of Gigi the year before, opposite Roderick Young, who had “played principal parts for the club for twenty years”. Saturday 10th November was the Charity Gala Night, with a buffet on stage in aid of the Friends of Frenchay to mark “The International Year of the Child”. The 20p programme also remembers George S. M. Edwards, “Our original Musical Director”.
